What is the Icebreaker about?
The Icebreaker is your chance, to contact other users. You saw a profile that particularly stood out and want to know more about this user? Then you can literally break the ice between you with the Icebreaker.
The Icebreaker replaces our current chat requests, but also offers a variety of new options. It is a special form of contact request, which is severely limited per day. Before you send an Icebreaker, you should think about who you want to give it to. When you receive one yourself, you can be sure that the author has serious interest in meeting you.
If your Icebreaker is not convincing enough and rejected - no problem, it can happen. We give you feedback and tips, to help you what you can do better in the future.
Why we created the Icebreaker.
Many of our users use LOVOO not only to look around, but to find a personal connection. Messages and especially the chat experience are very important for this.
Surveys among our users have shown, that we can improve quite a lot in this area: Women get too many chat requests, men much too few. And also the content of the messages, for example "Hey" or "Hi, what's up?", is too monotonous and boring.
This is exactly where the icebreaker comes into play! The Icebreaker brings new life to your inbox, improves the quality of your chats, gives notifications more impact and offers the chance to stand out from the crowd.
How does the Icebreaker work?
As with any conversation there are to sides to consider: the one of the author and the one of the recipient. To make sure you get a better picture of what the feature can do, we show you both sides.
The Icebreaker from the point of view of the author:
With the Icebreaker your first message may contain of 250 characters. That should be enough, to make a good first impression and to generate interest. Statistically, extremely long chat requests have the lowest response rate - closely followed by requests like “Hi” or ”Hey, what's up?” You may very well be creative.
The sending is not done via a button, but by using a 'swipe'. That minimizes the risk that the message is sent accidentally too early. In addition, you can easily consider whether your message is really final or maybe needs a finishing touch. Spelling is sometimes just as sexy as a flat belly or trained body.
The Icebreaker from the point of view of the recipient:
When you receive an Icebreaker, you get a push message to inform you about it. Also, within the app, the receipt of an Icebreaker message is highlighted.
Important to know: You can always open only one Icebreaker - all others only become readable once this one has been processed by you. There is no list of all remaining Icebreaker messages. Moreover, you cannot see how many Icebreakers you have in total. The one you are writing now might very well be the last one. This increases the tension a little as well as the personal value of each message. Each author has the same, fair chance to receive an answer, because it is not possible to skip or simply leave it unanswered.
There are still more innovations: When you open an Icebreaker, you can click on the profile picture to view all other picture of the user - without even navigating to the user profile. An answer to an Icebreaker does not automatically create a match.
And probably the biggest difference to the chat request: When you are not convinced by an Icebreaker and do not want to answer, we ask you for a reason. Your feedback is important to us, but also for the author of the message. But don't worry: Your feedback will be send to the user in the form of a general improvement proposal. He or she does not know directly why you rejected the message.
Where can I see Icebreakers I sent?
There is no list of unanswered or rejected Icebreakers. When someone replies to your Icebreaker, you can find the message in your chats and you can write each other like normal.
If you don't know, who you already sent an Icebreaker, simply have a look in the profile to check the letter symbol:
- Normal letter symbol: You have not sent an Icebreaker. It is time! ; -)
- A letter symbol with three small dots: You have already sent an Icebreaker, which has not yet been answered.
- A letter symbol with an “x": You have already sent an Icebreaker but it got rejected.
By clicking the letter symbol, you can read the message you sent and also see tips for improvement for your next message to someone else.
How many Icebreakers messages can I send per day?
As a basic user without a Premium membership you can send one Icebreaker per day. After spending it, it will recharge within 24 hours and will be available again the next day.
As a Premium member you have a total of three Icebreakers available per day. If you have sent more than one, they are not recharging at the same time, but one at a time. Each Icebreaker takes eight hours to recharge, until it is ready for use again. If you have used up all three Icebreakers within a short time period, it'll take 8 hours for you to send another Icebreaker.
As a Premium member you can buy additional Icebreakers. They can be accessed as soon as your regular Icebreakers have been used up. So you do not have to panic if your absolute dream partner comes along, but your Icebreakers are still loading. As a Premium user, you can easily find the profiles you liked in the past and contact them later on.
Where can I check when my Icebreaker is available again?
When you want to send an Icebreaker, you see how many regular Icebreakers you still have available or how long it takes them to refill. Should you have purchased additional Icebreaker messages, they are shown through a number after the Icebreaker loading bar.
When you try to contact a user without having regular Icebreaker left, then you are redirected to a purchase page where you can easily refill them.
Use the live radar to find out who is nearby. If you are wandering through the city and feel like some company, you can check the radar to see who is around in the area.
You can find the radar in the app for iOS and Android. Select the round radar symbol in the lower menu bar to get started.

In the Match game, you have the opportunity to rate the profiles of other users. If you like a profile, you can tap on the small heart and let your interest be known.
If you have rated a profile positively that has also positively rated you, there will be a match. Your matches are shown to you under "Notifications" in the "New Matches" list. You can write to your matches at any time and make exciting new acquaintances!
You gave a vote in the match game and want to take it back? No problem! As a basic user, you can take back a vote up to three times per day and as a Premium user even without limit. Please note that rewinding a vote is only possible for the last rated profile and not for votes that are already further in the past.
How does it work? Immediately after wiping to the left (you do not like that profile) or right (you like it) in the match game, you can click on the round icon in the top left corner (iOS) / upper right corner (Android) and the last profile will be displayed again as if nothing had happened. Now you can make your decision again.
Are your matches too far away?
In this case, you have already rates everyone in your area that matches your search filter. As a result, LOVOO then only suggests users to you that are further away from you to some extent.
In the chat function, there are various icons that we would like to explain.
- Green dot: The user is online.
- Green border around a grey dot: The user is available on a mobile device, but currently not online.
- Grey dot: The user is offline.
- Blue crest: The user is verified.
- Grey check: Message unread.
- Green check: Message read.
How can I increase my chances of getting an answer from another person? This is a question often asked by our users. We have a couple of tips for you.
Firstly, it is important to have a profile picture in which you are easily recognisable. Show your best side!
We recommend avoiding short messages such as "Hi, how's it going?" or "Hey, what's up?" when writing the chat requests. You can first view the profile of the user to help you write longer and creative messages. The profile details, description and images are important here. For example, these can show that this person likes to travel or plays a certain sport etc. Then it's up to you to formulate an interesting and creative chat request using this information.
A match vote is the easiest way to say "I like you" on LOVOO.
You want to see who likes you? Just click on the bell icon within your LOVOO app or on the website and choose “Likes”.
If your likes are blurry, unlock them with your credits, or take advantage of the Premium membership to immediately see all of your received likes. As a Premium member you also have an overview of your given likes.
In order to see who has viewed your profile, simply click on the bell icon in your LOVOO app and tap on "Views." On the website, just click on "Your Profile" in the top bar.
The profiles are blurry? Use your credits to uncover them or start off with the Premium membership to automatically see all your profile visitors.
Hint: Profile visitors are worth contacting. They have already taken a closer look at your profile, but you may not dare to contact you. Don’t be scared and take the first step!
